As GPs, we know the importance of keeping kids healthy when travelling. With summer holidays around the corner, families are gearing up for international trips and it’s a crucial time for GPs to be prepared. The Education team at The Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network caught up with Dr. Phil Britton, an infectious diseases expert from the Children’s Hospital at Westmead, to chat about travel-related illness in children and the crucial role GPs play in identifying children most at risk for typhoid and malaria, and ensuring safer travels for children and families.
Questions covered:

  • What are the most common illnesses seen in kids in Western Sydney after international travel?
  • Are there particular high-risk destinations for malaria and typhoid infection?
  • Which kids are at greater risk for malaria and typhoid?
  • What are the options for prevention for typhoid and malaria?
  • Tips for GPs for capturing these higher-risk families before they travel

This initiative is developed by the Sydney Child Health Program to prompt GPs of the upcoming holiday period and the flags to look out for when screening kids for travel.
